      Meet St. Agnes of Rome!

St. Agnes of Rome (January 21st)

Patron of: girls, gardeners, engaged couples
I am already promised to the Lord of the Universe. He is more splendid than the sun and the stars, and He has said He will never leave me!
      St. Agnes of Rome

St. Agnes of Rome lived during the third century in Rome. She is one of the martyrs listed in the Canon of the Mass. Agnes was just a young girl when she decided to dedicate her life to Christ, and wanted to remain unmarried. One suitor refused to respect her wishes, and feeling slighted, reported her to the authorities for being a Christian. Agnes faced her abusers and persecutors with courage, and refused to renounce her faith.

St. Agnes of Rome is a wonderful saint to teach children about the importance of staying true to God and to oneself. Introduce the story of St. Agnes of Rome using the educational insert in the box. Children will learn about an ancient Catholic tradition celebrated on the feast of St. Agnes. St. Agnes is also a great to speak with children about those that try to force them to compromise their beliefs. Meet St. Edith Stein!

      St. Edith Stein (August 9th)

Patron of: Europe, Jewish converts, martyrs, and the loss of parents.
“The world doesn’t need what women have, it needs what women are.”
      St. Edith Stein

St. Edith Stein, who is also known as St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, lived during the twentieth century in Europe. Edith was a brilliant Jewish woman who loved learning, and spent her life in pursuit of the truth. As an adult she decided to become Catholic and joined the Carmelite Order. She worked for many years teaching, and was known both for her intellect and her humility. Her life was tragically cut short when she was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp where she was murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

St. Edith Stein is a great Saint to teach children about the intellectual pursuit of the truth. Introduce the story of St. Edith Stein using the educational insert in the box. Children will learn about how God has given us our intellects as a gift that we can use to search for Him and the truth. Faith and reason must go hand-in-hand! St. Edith Stein is also a great role model for all children to learn that God calls us to the work He chooses for us- whether that is inside the home, at work, or in the religious life. Great for opening discussions about women s role in the Church and the community, the evil sins of anti-Semitism, racism and sexism, and the importance of always seeking the truth.

“Announce it, and let it be announced to the whole world, that I set neither limit nor measure to my gifts of grace for those who seek them in my heart!”
-Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

There have been many Saints throughout the years that have had a devotion to the heart of Jesus in one form or another. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as we now know it, was given to us by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque who received visions of Jesus in 17th century France. When Jesus appeared, he gave St. Margaret a list of blessings for those that practiced devotion to His Sacred Heart. The list included such wonderful blessings as peace in their families and consolation in all their troubles.

Introduce children to the centuries old tradition of devotions and encourage them to think about what parts of their faith speak to them the most.
